La Mercè (Barcelona)

24 September 2026 — I'm at the top of the tower! Waving from Barcelona – happy La Mercè!

La Mercè is Barcelona's main city festival, held around 24 September, the feast day of Our Lady of Mercy (Mare de Déu de la Mercè), patron of the city. It began as a religious observance and is now a multi-day civic festival with free concerts, dances and street performances. Best known are the castells (human towers): members of the teams (colles) climb onto one another's shoulders, and the smallest child scrambles to the top and waves. The Catalan tradition of building human towers is inscribed by UNESCO on its list of intangible cultural heritage. The festival also features gegants (giant parade figures) and the correfoc (“fire run”), a procession of costumed “devils” with sparkling fireworks. It arrives just after the autumn equinox (about 22–23 September), when day and night are nearly equal and the evenings grow longer and better for stargazing.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation: a tall human tower of stacked star-figures, with a tiny child at the very top waving a hand
