Kwanzaa

26 December 2026 — Seven candles, seven principles – a light for every day!

Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday celebrating African American heritage, observed from December 26 to January 1. It was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga as a way for the community to honor its roots, unity and shared life. The name comes from Swahili and refers to „first fruits“, echoing harvest festivals of Africa. Each of the seven days is devoted to a principle: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Each evening the family lights one candle in the kinara, a seven-branched candle holder holding three red, three green and one black candle in the middle. Other symbols include an ear of corn, fruits and crops, and a communal feast called karamu is held on December 31. The holiday has fixed dates and each year falls shortly after the winter solstice. The glow of the candles, lit one by one, is a picture of a community growing stronger day by day.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky: a seven-branched candle holder (kinara) whose seven flames light up one after another, three on one side, one in the center and three on the other
