Eid al-Adha
27 May 2026 · movable holiday — Eid Mubarak! Wishing you peace, health and warm gatherings.
Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of Sacrifice”, is one of the two major festivals of Islam. It falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, during the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, after the Day of Arafah. According to tradition, it recalls the prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to obey God, when a ram was provided to be sacrificed in place of his son. Believers gather for morning prayer, visit relatives and exchange greetings. Those who are able offer a sacrificial animal and share the meat among family, friends and people in need, so the festival is also a time of charity. In Bulgaria it is observed mainly by Muslim communities. The Islamic calendar is lunar: months begin with the sighting of the thin new crescent, so the festival moves about 10 to 11 days earlier each year against the solar calendar. That is why a crescent with a lantern drifts across our sky.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, blue-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a slender crescent moon with a softly glowing lantern hanging from its lower tip, drifting slowly across the night sky
