Feast of the Cross (Krastovden)

14 September 2026 — Happy feast day! May the autumn be kind and the grapes sweet.

The Feast of the Cross, called Krastovden in Bulgaria, is marked on 14 September, one of the major autumn feasts. The Church remembers the Exaltation of the Holy Cross: according to tradition, in the 4th century the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified was found in Jerusalem and solemnly raised before the faithful. It is a strict fast day. In Bulgaria the day is also part of the folk calendar: by custom, the priest blesses sprigs of basil, which people carry and keep at home. The grape harvest is traditionally said to begin now, and autumn truly sets in. Folk belief also sees the day as the turn toward the colder half of the year, hence the saying that snakes withdraw into their holes. The date is fixed: the Bulgarian Church keeps it by the New Style (by the Old Style it falls on 27 September). It comes shortly before the autumn equinox, when day and night become nearly equal.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a small sprig of basil beside a heavy cluster of grapes, softly glowing with autumn light
