Corpus Christi (Día de las Mulitas)

4 June 2026 · movable holiday — The little mule carries fruit and good cheer. Blessed day!

Corpus Christi is a Catholic feast honouring the Eucharist, the sacrament in which, according to Catholic faith, Christ is truly present in the bread and wine. It is kept on the Thursday 60 days after Easter, and in many places on the following Sunday. Its date therefore moves with the church calendar, which depends on the spring equinox and the first full moon after it. The feast dates back to the 13th century, and Pope Urban IV extended it to the whole Western Church in 1264. In Mexico it is also known as Día de las Mulitas, the Day of the Little Mules. Children, often dressed in traditional clothes, bring to church small mules woven from corn husks, the dry leaves of the corn cob. Baskets of fruit, vegetables and sweets hang from their backs. The mules recall the work of farm families and gratitude for the land and its gifts. The sky sets the start: Easter follows the first full moon after the spring equinox, and Corpus Christi comes sixty days later.
