Corpus Christi

4 June 2026 · movable holiday — May the streets bloom with petals and light!

Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body of Christ, is a Catholic feast honouring the Eucharist, the sacrament in which believers recognise the presence of Christ in bread and wine. It dates from the 13th century, and in 1264 Pope Urban IV extended it to the whole Western Church. It is held on the Thursday 60 days after Easter, so its date is movable and follows the church's lunisolar calendar: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. In Spain the best-known celebrations are the solemn processions in Toledo, Granada and Seville. In some towns the streets are strewn with flowers, herbs and colourful carpets of petals, and a procession carrying a monstrance, the vessel that displays the consecrated host, passes over them. In parts of the country, giant figures also take part in the parades. In much of Spain the liturgical celebration has been moved to the following Sunday, but cities such as Toledo, Seville and Granada traditionally keep the Thursday.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a drifting carpet of petal-shaped star patterns unrolling gently across the sky, with a softly glowing sunburst-shaped monstrance outline of stars at its center
