Corpus Domini and the Infiorata flower carpets

7 June 2026 · movable holiday — Petals for a path – let the procession walk on flowers.

Corpus Domini (Latin for “Body of the Lord”) is a Catholic feast honouring the Eucharist. The Church marks it on the Thursday 60 days after Easter, while in Italy the celebration is moved to the following Sunday, 63 days after Easter. In 2026 that is 7 June. In many Italian towns, such as Spello in Umbria and Genzano di Roma, the streets are covered with the Infiorata: carpets and pictures made of flower petals. People lay them out through the night before the procession, and the next day the procession walks over them. The pictures show religious scenes and patterns. The link to the sky is in the calendar: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox (which the Church fixes on 21 March), and Corpus Domini is counted from it. That is why the feast moves from year to year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver ribbon made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, unrolling slowly across the night sky as a long carpet path
