Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling
3 July 2026 · movable holiday — Hello, pehlivan! Grip firm, but fight fair!
Kırkpınar is a Turkish wrestling festival in which men grapple with their bodies covered in olive oil. It is held near Edirne, not far from the Bulgarian border, and tradition traces its roots back to the 14th century. The wrestlers, called pehlivans, wear leather breeches known as kispet. Before each bout the wrestlers are always covered in olive oil and perform a ritual greeting. The top title is başpehlivan (chief wrestler), and the winner is awarded a golden belt. The event is often described as one of the oldest continuously held sports competitions in the world. In 2010 it was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The date is not fixed: the festival takes place in late June or early July, and organisers announce the exact dates each year. Today it is held on the grassy meadow of Sarayiçi island near Edirne. The name is traditionally explained as combining kırk (forty) and pınar (spring). Its link to the sky is seasonal: it falls around the summer solstice, when nights are shortest.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and connected lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a broad-shouldered wrestler in leather breeches, one arm raised in the traditional greeting, with a faint shimmer as if glistening with oil
