Sts Cyril and Methodius (church feast)

11 May 2026 — A light for the letters, and for everyone who reads with love.

On 11 May the Bulgarian Orthodox Church honours Saints Cyril and Methodius, the brothers who created the Glagolitic alphabet and enlightened the Slavic peoples. This is their church feast date under the Revised Julian calendar, which the Bulgarian Orthodox Church has used since 1968; the secular holiday, the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and of the Slavonic Script, falls on 24 May. In churches the Divine Liturgy is served, prayers are read and the brothers' work is praised. They translated liturgical books into Old Church Slavonic so that people could hear the faith in a language they understood. The lamp beside the manuscript stands for the light of the written word. The feast has a fixed date, so it does not follow the Moon or depend on Easter, yet it is a good moment to look up at the sky and remember that people have long learned to read the stars as well.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a small hanging oil lamp (kandilo) with a softly glowing flame, floating beside an open manuscript whose pages are outlined in fine star-lines
