Easter (Western)
5 April 2026 · movable holiday — Christ is risen! May spring bring light into every home.
Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and is the most important feast in Christianity. Western churches, Catholic and most Protestant, observe it by the Gregorian calendar. The date moves from year to year: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March, which is treated as the date of the spring equinox. It can therefore land anywhere between 22 March and 25 April. The feast ends Lent and Holy Week. Familiar customs include sunrise services, Easter candles, decorated eggs and a family meal. The egg stands for new life, and light for hope. Easter thus ties church tradition to the sky: the equinox and the full moon decide when it is celebrated. In 2026, Western Easter falls on 5 April. Orthodox Easter often comes on a different day because it is calculated by the Julian reckoning.
