Notting Hill Carnival

30 August 2026 · movable holiday — Hear the steel drums? Come dance with us!

Notting Hill Carnival is London's biggest street festival and one of the largest in Europe. It has been held since the 1960s and grew out of community events organised by Caribbean settlers in the area. Each year it takes place over the Summer Bank Holiday weekend in late August, on Sunday and Monday. Sunday is traditionally the more family-oriented day, while Monday has the larger parade. The streets fill with processions of feathered and sequined costumes, calypso, soca and reggae, sound systems and steelpan drums (a Caribbean instrument made from a metal oil drum). The carnival is tied not to a solstice or a moon phase but to the English bank holiday calendar. Still, the long, warm evenings of late summer give London's night sky a lovely stage for its spirit.
