Candlemas (La Candelaria)
2 February 2026 — One small candle warms the whole night. Happy Candlemas!
Candlemas is celebrated on 2 February, forty days after Christmas in the Western calendar. It recalls the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem, described in the Gospel of Luke. There the elder Simeon calls the child a „light for revelation to the Gentiles“, which is why many Catholic churches bless candles on this day. In Spain the feast is known as La Candelaria. It is especially cherished in the Canary Islands, where it is linked with the Virgin of Candelaria, patroness of the archipelago, whose sanctuary stands in Candelaria on Tenerife. The date falls roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, so in the Northern Hemisphere it is often seen as a sign that the days are growing longer. In some countries it is also tied to folk sayings about the weather. A candle flame stands for hope and quiet light in the dark winter months.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver candle drawn from pale points of light and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky
