Regata Storica (Venice)
6 September 2026 · movable holiday — Row, row! The Milky Way is our Grand Canal!
The Regata Storica is one of Venice's best-loved festive events. It is held every year on the first Sunday of September along the Grand Canal, the city's main waterway. The programme opens with a graceful parade of historic boats whose rowers and passengers wear costumes from the age of the Venetian Republic. The procession includes a boat representing the Bucintoro, the ceremonial vessel once used by the Doge on grand occasions. The parade is followed by rowing races between gondoliers and oarsmen from across the lagoon, with coloured flags awarded to the winners. The festival blends sport, history and civic pride. It has no astronomical link: its date follows the civil calendar – the first Sunday of September, when summer in Venice fades.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and connecting lines, like a constellation: a graceful gondola-like boat with two rowers in Renaissance caps, oars sweeping across the sky as it glides along the Milky Way
