Holi

4 March 2026 · movable holiday — May the colors of spring bring joy and reconciliation!

Holi is a Hindu spring festival celebrating the triumph of good, new beginnings and the arrival of the new season. It is observed mainly in India and Nepal, and by Indian communities around the world. According to the best-known legend, the festival recalls how young Prahlada, a devotee of Vishnu, was saved, while the demoness Holika perished in the fire, which is why bonfires are lit on the eve. Customs differ from region to region. The eve is often marked with bonfires, and on the following day people greet one another by throwing coloured powder (gulal) and water, dance, sing and share sweets. Holi is also a time for reconciliation: old grudges are forgiven and friends and neighbours come together. The date follows the lunar calendar: the festival falls around the full moon of the month of Phalguna, usually in March, so it moves from year to year. The sky is part of the celebration, since the full moon lights the night on which Holi begins. For the exact date in a given year, it is best to check a calendar.
