Hıdırellez

6 May 2026 — Leap the fire, tie a wish to the rose bush!

Hıdırellez is celebrated on the night before and on the day of 6 May as a welcome to spring and summer. According to folk tradition, this is when two revered figures linked to nature and renewal meet, and the name is tied to them. The festival is inscribed on the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) list as a shared tradition of Türkiye and North Macedonia. People light bonfires and jump over them for health and luck, go out into nature, and share food. Many tie a ribbon or a scrap of cloth with a wish to a rose bush or another tree, and young girls try to foresee love and the future. The festival is related to Bulgaria's Gergyovden (St George's Day), held on the same date, 6 May. Both mark the heart of spring, when the Sun is high, days are long and nature is in bloom. The date follows the Gregorian calendar and is the same every year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver girl made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation, leaping lightly over a small fire of glowing star-points
