The holidays of the sky

🌕

Guru Purnima

29 July 2026 · movable holiday — Gratitude to everyone who has taught us something good.

Guru Purnima is a day of gratitude to spiritual teachers and mentors. It is observed in India and also in Nepal, and is honoured by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. Its date follows the lunar calendar: it falls on the full moon (purnima) of the month of Ashadha, usually in June or July. The day is also linked to the sage Vyasa, traditionally credited with organising the Vedas, which is why it is also called Vyasa Purnima. Buddhists remember the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath, while for Jains the day is associated with the start of Chaturmas, the four-month rainy-season retreat. Students offer flowers and lamps, ask for blessings, join in prayers and listen to teachings, and many spend the day in reflection. The full moon, a symbol of light and clarity, reminds us how much a teacher helps a person see more clearly.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a large full moon outlined in stars, with a small glowing oil lamp beneath it and a garland of flowers curving below the lamp
