Guru Nanak Gurpurab

24 November 2026 · movable holiday — May light and kindness reach everyone!

Guru Nanak Gurpurab (also called Gurpurab, “festival of the Guru”) marks the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, born in 1469 in Nankana Sahib (today in Pakistan). It falls on the full moon of the month of Kartik, so the date moves each year in the Gregorian calendar, usually landing in October or November. The lunar calendar sets the day: the celebration takes place on a night of full moon.

The observance begins with a two-day continuous reading of the Sikh scripture, Guru Granth Sahib (Akhand Path). A procession with hymn singing then moves through the streets. Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) are decorated and lit with lamps and candles. Every gurdwara runs a langar (community kitchen), serving free vegetarian food to everyone, whatever their background or faith. It reflects the ideas of equality, service to others and sharing.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation-like figure made of bright dots and thin lines: a row of small glowing oil lamps drifting across the night sky, leaving a soft warm path of light behind them
