Dormition of the Theotokos

28 August 2026 — May the little lamp glow gently for all who set out on a pilgrimage.

The Dormition of the Theotokos, known in Serbia as Velika Gospojina, commemorates the falling asleep of the Virgin Mary and, in the Church's belief, her passage into heavenly life. It falls on 15 August in the Julian calendar, which in the 21st century corresponds to 28 August in the Gregorian calendar. The Serbian Orthodox Church keeps the Julian church calendar, so the feast is marked on 28 August there. It closes the two-week Dormition Fast, which begins on 14 August in the Gregorian count. Believers attend the liturgy and make pilgrimages to monasteries, and many places hold monastery gatherings known as sabors. A small oil lamp burns before the icons, and homes and monasteries mark the day with prayer and a festive meal. The feast follows the church calendar rather than the Moon, so it falls on the same date every year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a small hanging oil lamp (kandilo) glowing softly beside a sprig of basil, with a faint arched monastery gate traced in starlight behind them
