Assumption of Mary

15 August 2026 — May the blessed herbs and good wishes keep you through the year.

On 15 August Christians remember the Dormition of Mary. In the Catholic Church the feast is called the Assumption of Mary. In the Orthodox tradition it is known as the Dormition of the Theotokos, and it is one of the great feasts of summer. In Germany the day is a public holiday in Saarland and in those Bavarian municipalities with a predominantly Catholic population (the majority of municipalities in Bavaria). The best-known custom is the blessing of herbs. In church, a Kräuterbuschen (a bundle of medicinal and fragrant plants such as mullein, St John’s wort and yarrow) is blessed. It is then kept at home as a sign of protection and blessing. The feast falls in the middle of August, when summer is at its height and the nights are growing longer. Around this time shooting stars from the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks around 12–13 August, can still be seen.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver bouquet of herbs made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation, tied with a softly glowing ribbon of stars
