St George's Day, Day of Bravery and the Bulgarian Army
6 May 2026 — Happy St George's Day! Take a green wreath for good health and swing with me up to the stars!
St George's Day falls on 6 May and is one of the best-loved holidays in Bulgaria. It honours Saint George the Victorious, and the Day of Bravery, first established in 1880, was restored as the day of the Bulgarian Army in 1993. As a folk festival it celebrates spring, shepherds and the start of the farming year. Early in the morning people gather green branches and flowers and use wreaths to decorate doors and flocks. Lamb and ritual bread are prepared, and in many places a kurban, a shared ritual meal, is offered for health and abundance. A cheerful custom is hanging swings in the trees: whoever swings is said to stay healthy all year. The day is an official public holiday. Its date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar and does not depend on the Moon, yet it arrives in the heart of spring, when, after sunset, the last winter stars linger low in the west while the spring constellations Leo and Boötes shine high overhead.
