Ganesh Chaturthi
14 September 2026 · movable holiday — May every new beginning start light and sweet!
Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival honoring Ganesha, the deity of new beginnings and wisdom, who is believed to remove obstacles. It falls on the fourth day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadrapada, usually in August or September, and can last up to ten days. Families and communities set up clay images of Ganesha in homes and decorated pavilions, offering flowers (often red ones), blades of sacred durva grass and modak, sweet rice- or wheat-flour dumplings filled with coconut and jaggery. The celebrations are especially grand in Mumbai, with processions, music and dhol drums. At the end, the images are carried in procession to a river, lake or sea and immersed in the water, as devotees bid farewell and ask him to return next year. The date follows the lunar calendar, so it shifts from year to year. Today many people choose natural clay figures to help keep waters clean.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a round offering tray with sweet dumplings, a blooming lotus rising above it, and a pair of dhol drums gently pulsing with sparkling points
