The holidays of the sky

🧵

Gandhi Jayanti

2 October 2026 — I spin my wheel and draw a thread of light. Happy birthday, Mahatma!

Gandhi Jayanti marks the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma (“great soul”), born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, India. He led the nonviolent struggle for India’s independence from British rule. The day is a national holiday in India, one of its three nationwide holidays alongside Republic Day and Independence Day. People hold prayer meetings, sing devotional songs and pay tribute at Raj Ghat in Delhi, where he was cremated. The spinning wheel (charkha) became a symbol of self-reliance: Gandhi encouraged spinning and weaving homemade cloth, called khadi, as a sign of independence. Since 2007 the UN General Assembly has also observed 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence. The date is fixed in the solar calendar and does not depend on the Moon.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure of a spinning wheel (charkha) made of bright points and thin lines, like a constellation, slowly turning as it drifts across the sky
