Palm Sunday (Florii)

5 April 2026 · movable holiday — A bright Palm Sunday! Happy name day to everyone with a flower name!

Palm Sunday, known in Romania as Florii, is celebrated on the Sunday one week before Easter. Orthodox Christians remember the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, when people welcomed him with branches and cheers. In Romanian churches, willow branches are blessed, because in the local climate they are among the first to turn green. After the service, believers take them home and place them near the icons. On this day, name days are celebrated by everyone whose names come from flowers, such as Florin, Florina, Violeta, Rosa and Liliana. The feast is movable: it follows the date of Orthodox Easter, which is set by the spring equinox and the first full moon after it, both reckoned by the Julian calendar: Easter is the first Sunday after that full moon. So Palm Sunday can fall between late March and early May, and in 2026 it is on 5 April. This links the sky and the calendar closely in this cheerful spring feast.
