Fiestas del Pilar (Zaragoza)

12 October 2026 — Flowers for the Pilar! May the sky bloom and ring with the jota.

Around 12 October, Zaragoza in Aragon, Spain, honours its patron, Our Lady of the Pillar (Nuestra Señora del Pilar). According to Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the apostle James by the Ebro river, leaving a pillar around which the basilica was later built. 12 October is also Spain's national day. The best-known tradition is the Flower Offering (Ofrenda de Flores) on 12 October: hundreds of thousands of people, many in regional costume, carry flowers to the square before the basilica, where they form a vast floral mantle. The fiestas also bring processions, jota contests (the jota is a traditional Aragonese dance with song and guitar), giant and big-head figures (gigantes y cabezudos), concerts and fireworks. The date follows the Gregorian calendar and falls in the first half of autumn, when nights grow noticeably longer and the sky is darker for stargazing.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation, forming a flower basket overflowing with star-blossoms that drifts slowly across the night sky
