Festival Internacional Cervantino
· movable holiday — Guitars, song and cobblestones – tonight the sky is the stage of Cervantino!
The Festival Internacional Cervantino is held every October in the city of Guanajuato, Mexico. It is named after the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. Its roots lie in open-air stagings of Cervantes's short plays (the entremeses) in the city during the 20th century; today it has grown into a major international event. The programme includes theatre, music, dance, opera, film, visual arts and literature, with guest countries or regions each year. Performances take place in squares, theatres and streets of the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Typical of the atmosphere are the estudiantinas – student singing groups in old-style costumes who wander the lanes with guitars. The festival lasts about three weeks, and exact dates are announced every year. It has no link to the lunar calendar or astronomical events; its dates are set by the organisers, traditionally in October.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure group made of bright points and thin lines, like a constellation: a few students in old-fashioned capes strumming guitars, drifting slowly across the night sky
