Parintins Folklore Festival

26 June 2026 · movable holiday — Two bulls dance over the Amazon – who will outdance the other?

The Parintins Folklore Festival is a major folk celebration in the city of Parintins, on an island in the Amazon River in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. It is held every year on the last weekend of June. At its heart is a contest between two teams, or “bois-bumbás” (from Portuguese boi-bumbá; boi means ox or bull): the red Garantido and the blue Caprichoso. Each team presents dances, songs, giant moving floats and costumes inspired by the legends and culture of Amazonian Indigenous peoples and by regional history. The festival takes place in a purpose-built arena called the Bumbódromo. A central motif is the folk story of a bull that is brought back to life, which gives the two bulls their shape. The festival falls in the middle of the year in the southern hemisphere, when Amazonian nights are often clear and the Milky Way arches above the river.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal star figure of a dancing bull glowing with a soft red tint, made of luminous dots and thin lines, with a small heart-shaped star on its forehead made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation moving across the night sky
