Hornbill Festival
1 December 2026 — I flap over Nagaland – the village rings with songs and dances!
The Hornbill Festival takes place every year from 1 to 10 December in Nagaland, a state in north-east India. It is named after the hornbill, a bird whose feathers and image hold an important place in the culture of many Naga tribes. The festival has been held since 2000 and opens on Nagaland Statehood Day, 1 December. The main venue is the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, near the city of Kohima. There, each Naga tribe has a traditional-style house and shows its songs, dances, costumes, crafts and food. It is often called the “festival of festivals” because it brings many communities together in one place. The programme also includes music events and competitions. The date is fixed in the ordinary calendar and is not tied to a lunar calendar or a solstice. Still, early December falls in the dry season, when the skies over the hills are often clear, and our starry hornbill soars above them.
