Weifang International Kite Festival

18 April 2026 · movable holiday — Grab the end of my tail – the wind is wonderful today!

Weifang, a city in Shandong province in eastern China, is often called the “kite capital of the world.” Kite making there has a long history and is part of the local craft and culture. Every spring, usually in April, the city hosts an international kite festival where makers and enthusiasts from many countries show their creations. The sky fills with kites shaped like birds, dragons, fish and long centipedes, made of bamboo, paper or silk. Most striking are the huge chain kites that stretch for tens, sometimes hundreds, of metres. The festival is movable: exact dates are announced each year, so it is best to check the official announcement. Spring suits kite flying because of its steady winds. In this way earthly craftsmen and the starry sky join hands: a string held against the wind seems to reach the constellations.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a long segmented kite with a dragon head, its round body discs and a thin tail rippling gracefully across the night sky
