Festino di Santa Rosalia (Palermo)
14 July 2026 — Roses for Palermo: the night glows for its patron saint.
The Festino di Santa Rosalia is the biggest celebration in Palermo. On the night of 14 July the city honours its patron saint. According to tradition, her relics were found in 1624, during a plague epidemic, and after they were carried in procession the disaster faded, so the saint has been linked with the city's deliverance. A tall decorated chariot is traditionally drawn along the main street, Via Cassaro, and on to the harbour and the sea. The procession is accompanied by music, prayers, the cry „Viva Palermo e Santa Rosalia!“ and a great fireworks display over the bay. On 15 July, the saint’s feast day, the silver urn holding her relics is carried through the city in a solemn procession, and pilgrimages in her honour continue in September. The date is fixed in the calendar and does not depend on the Moon, but a clear, warm summer night makes the fireworks glow even more beautifully under the stars.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a tall festive chariot crowned with garlands of roses, slowly gliding across the night sky toward a distant sea of stars
