Feast of the Divine Holy Spirit

24 May 2026 · movable holiday — The dove brings peace and light — blessed Feast of the Holy Spirit!

The Festa do Divino honours the Holy Spirit. In Brazil it is celebrated around Pentecost, which falls 49 days after Catholic Easter. The tradition was brought by Portuguese settlers and has medieval Portuguese roots. Its symbol is the white dove, often shown on a red flag with colourful ribbons. The flag travels in processions from house to house, and communities share a large communal meal, with food given out to all. In some places an “Emperor of the Divine” is chosen, a person who symbolically carries the festival's crown. The celebrations in Pirenópolis (Goiás) and Paraty (Rio de Janeiro state) are especially well known. The link to the sky is in the calendar: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March — the church date for the March equinox. Pentecost is counted from Easter, so the date moves every year.
