Feast of Saint Anthony

13 June 2026 — May love find its faithful way to you tonight.

On 13 June the Catholic Church remembers Saint Anthony of Padua (born in Lisbon), a friar and preacher who died in 1231. In Brazil he is honoured as a patron of lovers and marriage, which is why the day is linked to Dia dos Namorados (Lovers' Day) on 12 June, the evening before. The lily and the bread are symbols of purity and of help for the poor. The day belongs to the festas juninas (June festivals), a season of folk celebrations with paper lanterns, bonfires, dances and traditional corn-based dishes. They also involve Saint John (24 June) and Saint Peter (29 June). In Brazil June is a winter month: the southern hemisphere is close to its winter solstice (around 21 June), when nights are longest. Lanterns and bonfires light up these long evenings.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a small paper lantern drifting across the sky, carrying a tiny loaf of bread and a lily
