Festa de São João

24 June 2026 — The quadrille begins! Join hands and dance across the sky!

The Festa de São João is held on 24 June and is the high point of Brazil's June festivals (Festas Juninas). The tradition came from Portugal, where saints of June are honoured, and is linked to John the Baptist. It also falls near the June solstice, midsummer in the northern hemisphere. In Brazil, however, it falls in winter, and in the inland Northeast it coincides with the corn harvest. The celebrations are especially beloved in the Northeast. Streets are decorated with paper flags, bonfires are lit, and people dance the quadrilha (a square-dance style) to forró music (a popular northeastern genre). Tables fill with corn-based treats such as canjica (sweet corn pudding), pamonha (corn paste steamed in corn husks) and pipoca (popcorn). Many dress in rustic country style, with checkered shirts and straw hats. Cities such as Campina Grande and Caruaru are known for their large celebrations. The festival blends devotion, folk fun and a taste for the local harvest.
