Feast of Saint Peter

29 June 2026 — Fair winds to all fishermen and to all good people!

On 29 June most Christian churches honour the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul; churches following the old (Julian) calendar mark the feast on 12 July. Peter was a fisherman from Galilee and, according to the New Testament, one of the twelve apostles. Keys are his traditional symbol, recalling the Gospel words about the “keys of the kingdom of heaven”. In Brazil the day belongs to the festas juninas (June festivals), which begin with Saint Anthony, continue with Saint John and close with Saint Peter. He is especially cherished as the patron of fishermen. In many coastal towns there are masses, processions and decorated boats, and the little pennants are a familiar sign of the June celebrations. The feast has a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar. It falls shortly after the June solstice, which means early summer in the Northern Hemisphere, but winter days in Brazil, south of the equator.
