Falles (Fallas) of Valencia

19 March 2026 — I'm bouncing over Valencia – tonight the whole sky lights up!

Las Fallas is the biggest folk festival of Valencia, Spain. It runs from 15 to 19 March and ends in the night into 20 March. Huge satirical sculptures of wood, cardboard and other light materials rise in the streets. The small figures within them are called ninots (“puppets”). Each neighbourhood association, a comisión fallera, builds its own falla. The festival also features daytime firework displays called mascletà (loud, rhythmic bursts of noise), bands, and parades in traditional dress with flower offerings. On the last night, the Cremà, almost all the figures are burned. Tradition links the custom to St Joseph's Day, 19 March, and to old carpenters' workshops that burned leftover wood around this time, close to the spring equinox. In 2016 Las Fallas was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The fire in the night above the city recalls how, with spring, the days grow longer than the nights.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of light dots and thin lines, like a constellation, shaped as a cheerful round-headed puppet (ninot) that bounces across the sky, with tiny sparkling star-bursts like fireworks trailing around it
