European Night of Museums
23 May 2026 · movable holiday — Shh… the museum is open tonight! Let's explore by lantern light.
The European Night of Museums is an annual event in which museums open their doors in the evening and through the night, usually free or at a symbolic price. The European initiative was created in France in 2005 by the French Ministry of Culture under the name „La Nuit des musées“ (Night of Museums). Many other European countries later joined in. It is held on a Saturday around mid-May, and the exact date is announced every year. Besides night-time strolls through the galleries, there are often concerts, performances, meetings with curators and activities for children. Visitors who have no time during the day discover the collections in a completely different atmosphere. The link with the sky is the night itself: museums glow like lanterns under the stars, and some, such as planetariums and observatories, invite guests to look up at the Moon and stars. The exact date for a given year should be checked in the official event calendar.
