September Equinox

23 September 2026 · movable holiday — Day and night are in balance today. Then the nights begin to win!

The September equinox is the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator (the imaginary line that extends Earth's equator into the sky), moving from north to south. In the Northern Hemisphere it marks the start of astronomical autumn, and in the Southern Hemisphere the start of astronomical spring. Day and night are nearly equal in length, which is where the name, Latin for „equal night“, comes from. It happens every year around 22–23 September, and the exact time shifts slightly because of the calendar and Earth's orbit. In 2026 the equinox falls on 23 September, early in the morning Bulgarian time; the exact hour should be checked against timeanddate.com. Many cultures link this time with harvest and gratitude: in Japan, Shūbun no Hi (Autumnal Equinox Day) is a public holiday, and in China and Vietnam the Mid-Autumn Festival is also celebrated around this season. Ancient sky-watchers used equinoxes and solstices to track the turning of the year. So instead of a character, a pair of scales made of light drifts across the sky, and an autumn leaf falls from them at the end.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a pair of balance scales with a glowing Sun on one pan and a crescent Moon on the other, slowly levelling out
