Edinburgh Festival Fringe

7 August 2026 · movable holiday — Catch a star! At the Fringe, every street is a stage.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is one of the largest arts festivals in the world. It began in 1947, when eight groups that had not been invited to the official Edinburgh International Festival turned up and performed anyway. The name “fringe” came to mean an open festival where anyone can take part. As a result, the programme is huge: theatre, comedy, music, dance, circus and street performance. Small stages appear in pubs, churches, schools and even basements. The busiest spot is the Royal Mile, the old street at the heart of the city, where performers hand out flyers and give a taste of their shows. The festival runs for about three weeks in August, in high summer, when the northern sky stays light late into the evening. Towards the end of the month the nights draw in and the stars return. The exact dates change every year, so check the official programme.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver juggler made of glowing points and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky
