Saint George's Day (Đurđevdan)

6 May 2026 — A green wreath, a swing and a lamb – happy Đurđevdan!

Đurđevdan is observed on 6 May in the Gregorian calendar, which corresponds to 23 April in the older Julian calendar, the day on which the Orthodox Church honours Saint George. In Serbia it is one of the best-loved spring festivals. People celebrate outdoors: they gather greenery and flowers, weave wreaths and decorate houses and gates. Children and young women ride swings hung from tree branches, and lamb is often served at the table. The day marks the start of the shepherds' year and the height of spring. Many families also keep it as their slava, the family feast of a patron saint, when the household honours its saint, offers wheat and blessed bread, and welcomes guests. The well-known song „Đurđevdan“ is tied to the holiday. Its date follows the solar calendar rather than the Moon, arriving when the days are long and the spring constellations rise in clearer skies.
