Juneteenth

19 June 2026 — Freedom for all – this star shines to remember the day!

Juneteenth (a blend of June and nineteenth) marks 19 June 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas, that enslaved people in the state were free. This came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which could hardly be enforced in Texas at the time. The first celebrations were held in Texas as early as 1866, and the tradition later spread to other states. Today people mark the day with community gatherings, parades, readings of historical documents, music, family meals and outdoor get-togethers. The day also has its own flag, featuring a large star that recalls Texas and the dawn of a new beginning. On 17 June 2021, President Joe Biden signed a law making Juneteenth a federal holiday in the United States. The date is fixed and does not depend on the lunar calendar, but in June the days are long and warm and darkness falls late, which makes it a pleasant time for evening gatherings under the stars.
