Jidai Matsuri

22 October 2026 — Centuries of fashion are strolling across the sky, come and watch!

Jidai Matsuri, the Festival of the Ages, is held every year on 22 October in Kyoto (if it rains, the procession is postponed to the next day). The date is linked to the move of the capital to Heian-kyo (today's Kyoto) in 794 — by the old calendar, the 22nd day of the 10th month., and the festival itself was created in 1895 to mark the 1100th anniversary of that event. It is the festival of Heian Shrine (Heian-jingu), a Shinto shrine also built in 1895; portable shrines (mikoshi) honouring Emperors Kanmu and Kōmei, who are enshrined there, are carried in the procession. The main event is a large procession in which participants wear carefully recreated costumes showing different periods of Kyoto's history, arranged from the most recent back to the oldest. Among them are historical figures, warriors from different eras, court ladies, musicians and banner bearers. Great attention is paid to fabrics, hairstyles and ornaments. The festival is fixed in the calendar, so it does not follow the phases of the Moon. In the northern hemisphere, 22 October falls in autumn, when skies are often clear and good for stargazing. In Astronativa, this colourful parade crosses the sky as a glowing constellation figure.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and connecting lines, like a constellation: a graceful court lady in long layered robes with a flowing sleeve, walking slowly across the night sky
