Cemre Falls into the Earth

6 March 2026 — The third spark warms the earth – snowdrops are coming!

Cemre is a Turkish folk belief about three “sparks” of warmth that arrive as winter ends. The first is said to warm the air, the second the water, and the third falls into the earth and wakes it for spring. The sparks are usually placed around 19–20 February, 26–27 February and 5–6 March, though the exact days vary by source and year. After the third one, spring is considered to have arrived, even if the weather is still cold. People watch the weather, look for the first signs of spring and talk about the coming warmth. The tradition is tied to the farming calendar: the end of winter signals when gardens and fields should be prepared. The link to the sky is symbolic, as the sparks “fall” from above, while day and night nearly equalise at the spring equinox (the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator) around 20 March. Meteorologists note that cemre is not a strict scientific term but part of folk tradition.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver spark made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a tiny constellation drifting down across the night sky
