Cemre Falls into the Water
27 February 2026 — The warm spark has touched the water – the ice is softening!
Cemre is a folk belief found in Turkey and in other regions with Ottoman cultural ties. According to it, three warm “sparks” fall one after another at the end of winter and bring spring. The first is said to warm the air, the second the water, and the third the earth. The second cemre is usually said to fall into the water around 26–27 February, melting the ice, and people say winter is giving way. Exact dates vary by local tradition and source, so they should be treated as approximate. The belief is not an astronomical event but an observation from the folk calendar: it marks the time when days grow noticeably longer and the sun climbs higher. That makes the image of a spark dropping into a lake a fitting one for the night sky. Today, cemre is still mentioned in conversation and in weather reports as a sign that spring is coming.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver spark made of bright dots and fine lines, like a tiny constellation drifting across the sky
