Cemre Falls into the Air
20 February 2026 — The first warm spark of spring is drifting through the air!
Cemre is a Turkish folk concept describing the first signs of warming at the end of winter. According to popular belief, three warm sparks called cemre fall one after another: the first into the air, the second into the water, and the third into the earth. With each one the weather grows milder and nature begins to wake. The first is usually said to fall around 19–20 February, the second around 26–27 February, and the third around 5–6 March. It is often said that spring begins after the third. The word means ember or glowing coal. The dates are approximate and passed down by tradition rather than set by a strict astronomical rule. In calendar terms, cemre marks the end of winter, but it does not coincide with the equinox (the moment when day and night are nearly equal), which falls around 20 March. It is a nice reason to look up: the days are visibly lengthening, and the winter constellations are slowly sliding toward the west.
