Pentecost (Holy Trinity Day)
31 May 2026 · movable holiday — Peace and grace to every home – blessed feast day!
Pentecost, known in the Orthodox tradition as the Feast of the Holy Trinity and in English-speaking Western tradition as Whitsunday, is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter. According to Christian tradition, on this day the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, who began to speak to people in many languages. For this reason the feast is often called the birthday of the Church. Orthodox believers keep it on a Sunday, and local customs on the following days differ from region to region. Churches and homes are traditionally decorated with green branches and grass, often including linden twigs, as a sign of life and renewal. The dove is the best-known symbol of the Holy Spirit. The date is movable because it depends on Easter, which falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. In this way the feast is tied to the rhythm of the sky. Orthodox Easter is calculated using the Julian Paschal reckoning.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver dove made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation gliding across the night sky with softly spread wings
