Whit Monday

1 June 2026 · movable holiday — Peace and light to you on the Day of the Holy Spirit!

Whit Monday, known in Greece as Agiou Pnevmatos, is the day after Pentecost. In the Orthodox calendar it falls on the Monday fifty days after Easter. Pentecost remembers the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, as told in the Acts of the Apostles, and the following day is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. In Greece it is a public holiday. After the solemn services and special prayers of Pentecost, many families spend the day together in the countryside. In Christian art the Holy Spirit is often shown as a dove, which is why a dove of light crosses the sky. The feast is movable and depends on the date of Easter. Orthodox churches calculate it from old tables: Easter is the first Sunday after the paschal full moon falling on or after 21 March in the Julian calendar. That full moon is calculated, not observed, and can differ from the real one by a few days. Even so, the Moon indirectly sets the date of Whit Monday. In 2026 it falls on 1 June.
