Dragobete
24 February 2026 — The birds get engaged today – spring is coming with a song!
Dragobete is a Romanian folk festival of love and spring, celebrated on 24 February. It is sometimes called the “Betrothed of the Birds”, because tradition says that on this day the birds pair up and begin to build their nests. The name is linked to a figure of Romanian folklore, a handsome, kind and cheerful young man who watches over love and merriment.
Traditionally, young men and women go out into the fields or woods in the morning to gather the first spring flowers, such as snowdrops. People believe that anyone who hears birdsong and meets someone of the opposite sex on this day will be lucky in love for the whole year. Young people also meet and exchange kisses.
The festival marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring. It falls near the end of February, when the days are noticeably growing longer and the first migratory birds begin to return. In recent decades the custom has regained popularity in Romania as a local day for lovers.
