European Heritage Days
19 September 2026 · movable holiday — Doors are opening! Step in and explore – today heritage belongs to everyone.
European Heritage Days began in France in 1984 under the name „Journée portes ouvertes dans les monuments historiques“ (Open Day in Historic Monuments). The idea is simple: for one weekend the public can enter buildings that are usually closed, including government institutions. In France the event is held on the third weekend of September, which in 2026 means 19 and 20 September. The initiative was later taken up by the Council of Europe and the European Union and spread to dozens of European countries. Each year has a common theme, while the programme differs from country to country: castles, palaces, museums, libraries, churches, factories and gardens, often with free entry and guided tours. The event is not tied to a lunar calendar or a particular astronomical event, but it falls close to the autumn equinox (when day and night are nearly equal), at the start of autumn. The key in the Astronativa sky is an invitation: open the door and discover history.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure of a large ornate antique key, drawn as a constellation of bright dots and thin connecting lines, drifting slowly across the night sky; tiny sparkles trail from its teeth like opening doors
