Diwali

8 November 2026 · movable holiday — One small light warms the whole night. Happy Diwali!

Diwali, or Deepavali, is one of the most beloved festivals in Hinduism. Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists also celebrate it, each community with its own stories. What they share is the theme of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival lasts several days, and its main night falls around the new moon of the lunar month of Kartika, usually between October and November. Because the calendar is lunisolar, the date shifts each year. In 2026 the main day is expected around 8 November. People clean and decorate their homes, light diyas (small clay oil lamps), make patterns from coloured powder or flowers at the doorway (called rangoli), exchange sweets and gifts, and gather with family. In some places there are fireworks too. The new moon makes the night its darkest, and a row of tiny flames shines even brighter beneath the stars.
