Flag Day

14 June 2026 — The wind sways me, and little stars dance all around me!

Flag Day in the United States is observed on June 14. On that date in 1777, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution establishing the first official flag of the young nation: thirteen stripes and thirteen stars on a blue field, standing for the original thirteen states. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the day in 1916, and in 1949 Congress formally established it by law as National Flag Day. It is not a federal public holiday. Many towns hold parades, flag-raising ceremonies and school activities that teach children the story of the symbol. Today's flag carries fifty stars, one for each state. The stars on it echo the night sky, though this is symbolism of unity rather than an astronomical event. The holiday falls on a fixed date and has no link to the lunar calendar, so every June 14 offers the same occasion to look up at the stars and remember shared symbols.
