Flag Day

24 February 2026 — Green, white and red – Green, white and red – the eagle from Mexico’s flag glides across the sky!

Every year on 24 February, Mexico celebrates Flag Day (Día de la Bandera). The flag has three vertical bands of green, white and red, with the national coat of arms in the middle of the white band: an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus (nopal), holding a snake. The image comes from an Aztec (Mexica) legend, which says their god of war, Huitzilopochtli, told them to build their city where they saw an eagle on a cactus. They saw it on an island in Lake Texcoco, and Tenochtitlan, today's Mexico City, was founded there. The day has been observed since the 1930s and was made official under President Lázaro Cárdenas. Schools, military units and official ceremonies mark it with pledges of allegiance, songs and speeches. The holiday is not tied to any astronomical event, but the eagle on the cactus is one of the country's best-known symbols. The date is fixed and falls on the same day of the calendar each year.
